Little things build confidence

One of the most important things when deciding to become an electrician is confidence. I had to keep building up my level each day. I felt like I needed to know that I can do this. I remember a time when I went on a service call with a contractor that I had just started working for. The lead on this job told me that I was responsible for installing a ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms.

I felt a little nervous doing this. I had never installed a fan before. He let me do every part of it. I just read the directions, and got it built in a little over an hour. This was a builder grade fan, so it wasn't too complicated. I remember turning it on. I felt so proud when we tested it.

I've installed this type of ceiling fan over one hundred times in my nine years in the trade. I'll never forget installing that first one. I gained confidence that I could get better as an electrician. If you're an apprentice, you need to know that you can do this. You won't learn everything as quickly as you'd like. You just have to take the little wins of doing things right. That's how you will keep learning. When you see yourself completing your tasks, you will look forward to the next day of work.
